An Interview With Anirban Jee

Q: Tell us who you are and how you started to make music!

A: I’m Anirban Jee from Australia and I’ve been a songwriter and composer for over 10 years now. All of my past releases have secured radio airplay and won several awards in Songwriting contests. My musical awakening spawned at the age of 12 when I received my first electronic keyboard. During my teen years, I found myself dabbling in numerous music tuition courses, and on the back of many years of self-studying Piano/Keyboard through school and university, I was able to hone my musical growth to original songwriting, musical compositions, artist collaborations and performing.

Q: What inspires you to write and create songs?

A: The reason I like Pop music is that it comes from the phrase “popular music”. The trick is how to write songs and melodies that can get ‘popular’ by making a mark in people’s minds and hearts even if they listen only once! I feel intrigued as to why some songs become international hits and some don’t. That’s what got me interested in learning the art of songwriting and composing melodies. I feel creative satisfaction when my songs get played on the radio and create interest from listeners to make an effort to connect with me and know me a bit more as an artist and songwriter. It’s a long journey I know but songwriting keeps me motivated and young at heart!

Q: Do you have a specific creative process?

A: I just go with the flow while playing my keyboard and just record and write down any melodies and lyrics that come to mind. I give importance to the theme and central idea of the song and also the melodic impression it creates on listeners. As a songwriter, I explore creative options and push myself to make a song as best as it can be before presenting it to the world as a release.

Q: Who are your current favorite new artists?

A: I have a wide musical palette. Right from the 90s until 2022, I listened to Elton John, Carol King, Michael Jackson, Sting, and Maxwell. Phil Collins, Usher, Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Backstreet Boys, Ed Sheeran, Guy Sebastian, Kyle Minogue, Jessica Mauboy, and many many other POP artists. I keep an eye out for the latest releases from these artists and try to track the evolution of music and songwriting that has taken place over the years.

Q: How would you describe your latest release?

A:‘You On My Side’ portrays the fulfillment and celebration of finally meeting the love of one’s life who believes in them and remains on their side through the ups and downs in life. It is a tribute to every person’s journey to find the love of their life.’ And many will indeed identify with this significant life experience.
I tried utilizing refined rhythms, well-crafted melodic phrases, and focused on delivering a definitive vocal performance. The track was written by me and recorded, produced, and mastered by Sydney’s multi-platinum producer Steve Peach (Icehouse, Marcia Hines, Stafford Brothers, The Voice Contestants, Jenny Morris, Choirboys) from Stereo Missile Recordings.

Q: Who would your dream collaboration be with, and why?

A: I would love to collaborate with Max Martin in terms of songwriting and music production. I love his style of songwriting and he has proved beyond doubt that his strategies work. He has survived through all these years and kept producing hit after hit.

Q: What can we expect from you in the future?

A: I will be recording my second single of the year soon which I plan to release by August-September. Currently, my single ‘You on My Side’ is getting Australian radio plays and I’m getting some interview requests as well which is a great start !
