Q: Hey, how would you describe your sound to someone who’s not heard your music before?
A: This new album, Roadmap To Redemption, which will be released on March 31, is, in a way, eclectic. That is to say, it brings together a multitude of sound inspirations. Mobile remains a group of five musicians that we could associate with rock, that is to say, drum, bass, guitars, keys, and vocals. The drum and the dynamics are played in exceptional ways by Pierre-Marc. So the groove is central to this new album. Then, the general sound of Roadmap To Redemption is inspired by the 70s/80s.
Q: What inspirations came to you while creating Roadmap To Redemption?
A: At the musical level, everything that could inspire me I took notes of it or recorded it. There was a clear idea that I had imposed on myself, that of recording as many ideas as possible and then subtracting them, keeping only what surprised me. We could say that it is the musical encounter between The Cure, The Aloof, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, LCD Soundsystem, and Mobile. Also, I was inspired by shoe-gazing guitars and dream/pop synthesizers. Finally, the soundtrack of the series " Stranger Things", as well as " Twin Peak" had an important influence on the desired atmospheres. As for the lyrics, it is partly Mat who revisits the past, our history, and his perception of certain subjects. He would be in a better position than me to talk about it.
Q: If you could choose, which song on your new album means the most to you, and why?
A: Maybe Modern Lovers, because it’s the starting point for the new album. We were in 2009-2010 and the idea came up quickly. The arrangements weren’t finished yet, but Mat had made a recording at home and everything was there, the melody and the key phrases. Everyone felt we had something, but we had to find the right arrangements.
Q: What is the biggest challenge of being a band?
A: The negotiation between the demands of our respective lives and having fun. If you’re not careful, it can go wrong.
Q: What inspires you the most to write your songs?
A: It’s hard to define. I rely on my internal thermometer. When I get excited, I have to address it, whether positively or negatively. In short, it is to transpose, to translate what I live, what I perceive in sound and rhythm. Obviously, hearing and
discovering music is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Human relations are also very inspiring for me.
Q: Who would your ultimate dream collaboration be with, and why?
A: David Bowie, with Brian Eno and Tony Visconti. Because what they have created, through the Berlin trilogy, is simply phenomenal. It is a combination of pop, rock, experimentation, synths, and with extremely creative musicians. Great minds met at this time in history.
Q: If there’s one song from your catalog that you wish everyone in the world could listen to, which one would it be?
A: Surreal Seeker, to destabilize expectations a bit.
Q: What do you have planned for the year ahead?
A: The album comes out on March 31 and we are really excited. For the past few weeks, we have been practicing the songs that we are going to play live and so far it is going very well. It’s always stressful to play new songs. We are planning a lot of interviews for the next few weeks and shows for the summer and fall. We are really looking forward to getting back on stage and we are confident that the new and old songs will get the crowd going.
