An Interview With Josh Bogert

Q: Welcome! Can you introduce yourself to our readers?

A: Hey, my name is Josh and I’m a pop singer, songwriter, and producer. I have been releasing music since 2016, and am excited to be releasing my first full-length album this summer!

Q: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s not heard your music before?

A: I would say my sound is a combination of story-driven singer/songwriter lyrics and electronic pop polish. Think JP Saxe meets Justin Beiber.

Q: You recently released your new single ”That Was Then, This is Now”, can you tell us what the song is
about?

A: This song was really about collaboration. I had never written a song with Olivia before but had heard of her through a mutual songwriter friend Andrew Allen. I really love her music and voice and suggested that the three of us should get together to write a song! We ended up writing “That Was Then, This Is Now”, both Olivia and I loved it so much we wanted to collaborate on the release. I think the lyrics have such a cool meaning, about how a relationship can be so good at one time, yet later it can feel like that magic just doesn’t exist anymore, no matter how much you want it to.

Q: When did you realize that you wanted to become a musician?

A: Music has been a huge part of my life since the day I was born. We always had music playing in the house, and I started weekly music lessons when I was 4 years old, so I was already a musician before I really understood the meaning of it. I think it was around 10 years old that I started to realize what a career in music might look like, and I made the decision to pursue it consciously.

Q: What inspires you the most to write your songs?

A: When it comes to songwriting, my main inspirations come from my own real-life experiences. Most of the songs I write alone are true stories, although I also love taking inspiration from other songwriters when I’m co-writing.

Q: Who would be your ultimate dream collaboration with, and why?

A: I would love to write with JP Saxe, I think he is one of the best songwriters of all time, and he just seems like a cool guy, so I think it would just be amazing to work with him.

Q: If there’s one song from your catalog that you wish everyone in the world could listen to, which one
would it be?

A: There are so many songs in my catalog that I’m proud of, and that I wish more people were listening to, but if I had to pick one I’d go with “When I Grow Up” which I released earlier this year. It’s one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written, and it’s about my journey with mental health and how it relates to my decision to pursue a career as an artist.

Q: What do you have planned for the year ahead?

A: For a while, I’ve really been focused on my album, which comes out this summer! I’ll be spending some time in Toronto around the release performing shows and festivals including Canadian Music Week and NXNE. After that, I’ll probably get back to lots of writing sessions and create new material for future projects. It’ll be nice to transition from “promo mode” back into “creative mode” after the release of the album going into the fall and winter of this year.
